Addiction, no matter what the addiction is to, is a powerful thing. It can take hold of your life and consume it in an instant. No one wakes up and says “today I will be an addict.” That’s because addictions make everything else in life seem trivial.
Many things take a back seat to addiction including your family, friends, your home, your bills and obligations and so much more. Even if you have everything a person could possibly want; addiction could cause you to end up with nothing.
Addiction isn’t discriminatory. It doesn’t pick and choose. Anyone at any time can become an addict. Even celebrities have succumbed to the power of addiction. Here is a list of celebrities who suffered from various addictions:
Drew Barrymore – As a young teenager, Drew battled her addiction to drugs. She was consumed by a life of partying which ended her up in rehab twice. She eventually left rehab and the life of drugs behind her for a sober and clean lifestyle. Now a mom, Drew doesn’t focus on what was but now what lies ahead of her.
Mary-Kate Olsen – One half the dynamic Olsen twins, Mary-Kate battled with anorexia for a long time. She then doubled the addiction by using cocaine. Spiraling out of control, Mary-Kate ended up going to rehab in order to lead a better life. Since then she and her sister have designed clothing as well as handbags.
Lindsay Lohan – When you say the name Lindsay Lohan most people think of a troubled young woman who was always in the news for her legal troubles. The legal issues included incidences that stemmed from alcohol abuse, drug abuse, DUI citations and more. Lohan ended up in rehab multiple times.
Corey Haim – As with many child actors, Haim found himself spiraling out of control and partying in excess. In 2010 Haim was found unresponsive and his ultimate death was ruled due to a bad concoction of prescription medications.
River Phoenix – Phoenix was a child actor who sky rocketed to fame during the 1980’s. However his fame was short lived because in 1993 he was found dead as a result of his excessive use of heroin.
Robert Downey Jr. – Robert Downey Jr. is an amazing comeback story. Downey admits he tried drugs for the first time at the age of 6. In 1996 he was arrested on his first of many drug charges. After several arrests and stints in rehab, Downey changed his life by getting clean and sober. Since then he has done what many never thought he would ever do and that was come back bigger and better than ever.
Nicole Richie – The daughter of singer Lionel Richie has a troubled past that has included many addictions including marijuana, heroin and cocaine. Nicole was in five automobile accidents while under the influence and was arrested three times.
These stories clearly show that addiction can take hold of anyone at any time. No one is exempt from the addictive nature of drugs, alcohol and more. It’s easy to get addicted to something but hard to walk away from it. That is where rehabilitation comes into play. Rehab will help patients walk through the process of getting clean and sober. It’s a long road but it is a road that can be traveled successfully.
